ABOUT BRANDL

BRANDL works as a MIDI drum pad. It doesn’t produce any sounds.
The BRANDL module is located in the System Modules list.

In the Brandl Freemium version you can only use 4 pads in the Pad Mode and play with 2 fingers in the Ergonomic Mode. You can purchase the BRANDL PREMIUM MODULE to access the full version: 16 pads in the Pad Mode / Up to 5 fingers active in the Ergonomic Mode. (see Premium modules & Pack IN-APP Purchases).

HOW TO SET UP BRANDL

Follow these steps to get started with Brandl:

  • Go to Preferences > MIDI Sync tab and make sure that the Track switch in the MIDI Ports section is set to ON in the MIDI input.

  • Create a MIDI track in your Ableton Live set.

  • Drag the Drum Rack that you want to control from the browser to the MIDI track.

  • You can also drag a blank Drum Rack and add the instruments/sounds you want to play with.

  • Select the CONDUCTR MIDI input in the “MIDI from > All Ins” drop down menu.

PLAYING WITH BRANDL

The Brandl drum pad features 2 different modes: Pad and Ergonomic.

Brandl Pad Mode:

When you load the Brandl module in the Playground, it will appear on Pad Mode by default.
Both the Pad and Ergonomic modes feature a Settings side menu. You can fold/unfold it by tapping on the Menu icon.

THE PAD MODE

The Brandl Pad Mode interface features 16 pads on a 4×4 matrix, 8 macro controllers and one XY-4D FX unit.
Each pad’s MIDI mapping and volume settings can be edited independently.

  • Select Brandl on the System Modules list*.
  • Select the MIDI range you want to play with by dragging the MIDI Range Selection window on the side menu. Each slot’s sample name will appear on each pad.**

AUTOMATIC Ableton Drum Rack Mapping
When you load Brandl for the first time within an Ableton Live project, it maps your drum rack with the Automatic mode by default. Even if you change the mapping with the Manual mode, you can recover the original MIDI settings anytime by re-activating the Automatic mode.

  • Tap on the editor Icon in the Settings menu.

MANUAL Mapping
You can edit any pad’s MIDI mapping in Manual mode.

  • Tap on the editor Icon in the Settings menu.
  • Select Manual mode (M) in the MIDI settings section and tap on “EDIT”.

  • You can scroll within any pad to assign any MIDI range. The range goes from A to G and from -2 to +8.

  • Once you’ve edited your pads’ MIDI mapping, tap again on “EDIT”.

Your Manual MIDI mapping settinga are saved automatically when you close your Conductr project. To recover it on future sessions, simply select the Manual mode (M) in the menu’s MIDI settings section.

Volume modes
You can play your pads with fixed or flexible volume levels.
“Fixed volume levels” means that the volume of the pads won’t be affected by your physical performance and will always stay on the same level.
“Flexible volume values” means that the volume of the pads will change depending on how you interact physically with them on the Brandl interface.

– Tap on the editor Icon in the Settings menu.

There are 2 fixed volume values modes: Manual (M) and Global (F1 to F5).
The Manual (M) mode allows you to edit each pad’s fixed volume value independently:

  • Select the Manual mode (M) in the Volume settings section and tap on “EDIT”.

  • Adjust each pad’s volume level (range goes from 0 to 100).

  • Tap on “EDIT” again.

The Global mode allows you to adjust the track’s overall general volume. The range goes from F1 (lowest) to F5 (highest).
– Select the global volume range you want to play with (F1 to F5) in the Volume settings section.

Flexible volume modes
There are 2 flexible volume level modes: Touch Size (TSZ) and Center-Relative (CTR).
The Touch Size (TSZ) mode allows you to control each pad’s volume depending on the portion of your finger tapping on each pad (i.e. the lesser the portion of a finger touches the pad means the lesser the volume).

  • Tap on the editor Icon in the Settings menu.
  • Select TSZ in the Volume settings section.

The Center-Relative (CTR) mode allows you to control each pad’s volume depending on the pad’s area you tap on. The closest to the center of the pad, the highest the volume.

  • Tap on the editor Icon in the Settings menu.
  • Select CTR in the Volume settings section.

BRANDL FX unit
You can control up to 8 macros in your Ableton drum rack with the Brandl FX Unit. You can also control 4 parameters from any FX unit through a XY-4D interface.

  • Tap on the Brandl Shift Mode Icon.

  • The 8 faders located in the bottom right control the macros you have mapped in your drum rack.

  • To control up to 4 parameters from any FX unit with the XY-4D FX Unit, open the Settings Menu and tap on FX > EDIT.

  • Tap on a coordinate (X, Y, Z or K) “LEARN” button and move the parameter you want to assign with your mouse.*

  • Once you are done, tap on FX > EDIT again.

THE ERGONOMIC MODE

The BRANDL Ergonomic Mode allows you to adapt up to 5 pads to your hand’s morphology, allowing you to perform with a more intuitive and organic interface.*

  • Tap on the Ergonomic Mode Icon.

  • Open the Settings Menu and tap on “Calibrate”.

  • Touch the screen with up to 5 fingers with ease.

  • Take your fingers off the screen. The interface will show you the interaction mapping.

  • To assign a different pad to any finger, tap on the “Notes” button in the Settings Menu.

  • Tap on the selected finger’s area.

  • The Pad Mode will open automatically. Tap on the slot you want to assign.

  • Tap on the “Notes” button again once you are done.
